Desert landscaping doesn't have to look like a desert.

Living in Las Vegas doesn't mean your yard has to be filled with nothing but rocks and cactus. With the right plants, you can create a landscape that's colorful, green, modern, and designed to handle our desert climate.

At All American Landscape, we've spent over 25 years designing and installing landscapes throughout Las Vegas, Henderson, and Summerlin. These are 12 of our favorite plants to use when homeowners want a beautiful yard without constant maintenance.

The key is choosing plants that work with our climate, installing proper drip irrigation, and giving each plant enough room to grow.

1. Bay Laurel

Best for: Privacy, evergreen greenery, and modern landscapes

Bay Laurel is one of our favorite plants when we want to create a lush, green appearance without using traditional hedges.

Its dense evergreen foliage works beautifully along walls, around patios, and in areas where homeowners want additional privacy.

Why we love it:

  • Stays green throughout the year

  • Creates a clean, upscale appearance

  • Can be maintained as a shrub or trained into a tree

  • Works well in modern landscape designs

Our design tip: Give Bay Laurel enough room to mature. We often use it to soften block walls, but spacing is important so the plants don't become overcrowded. It benefits from afternoon shade in especially hot locations.

2. Yellow Bells

Best for: Bright color and sunny backyards

If you want a landscape that feels alive, Yellow Bells is a great option.

This plant produces bright yellow trumpet shaped flowers during the warmer months and adds a tropical feeling to desert landscaping.

Why we love it:

  • Beautiful yellow flowers

  • Handles intense summer heat

  • Attracts pollinators

  • Adds height and color to planting beds

Our design tip: Yellow Bells can grow larger than homeowners expect. We like placing it where it has room to fill out naturally rather than constantly trimming it into a small ball. It may die back during cold winters and return in spring. If you would like it to be smaller, then you would choose a Sparky Bell. These do not grow as tall as yellow bells.

3. Texas Sage

Best for: Purple flowers and water conscious landscaping

Texas Sage is a Las Vegas landscaping favorite for a reason.

Its silvery green foliage and purple flowers provide a beautiful contrast against decorative rock, pavers, and darker green plants.

Why we love it:

  • Drought tolerant once established

  • Handles full sun

  • Produces seasonal purple flowers

  • Complements both modern and traditional landscapes

Our design tip: Avoid overwatering and excessive trimming. Texas Sage looks best when it can maintain its natural shape, and some varieties become quite large.

4. Regal Mist

Best for: Soft texture, movement, and fall color

Regal Mist is one of our favorite ornamental grasses to incorporate into landscape designs.

Its soft green foliage creates movement, and its pinkish purple flower plumes provide an incredible display in the fall.

Why we love it:

  • Adds softness to rock and hardscape

  • Beautiful seasonal color

  • Looks great planted in groups

  • Works well around patios and walkways

Our design tip: Plant Regal Mist in groups of three or five for a fuller appearance. It typically needs seasonal cutting back to encourage fresh growth.

5. Golden Yucca

Best for: Architectural interest and year round color

Golden Yucca adds structure and a bright pop of color without needing flowers.

Its yellow and green foliage looks especially good against darker decorative rock and modern pavers.

Why we love it:

  • Evergreen appearance

  • Strong architectural shape

  • Low water needs once established

  • Provides color throughout the year

Our design tip: Use Golden Yucca as an accent plant rather than repeating it everywhere. Allow plenty of clearance from walkways because the leaves can have sharp tips.

6. Twin Flowered Agave

Best for: Modern desert landscaping and unique texture

Twin Flowered Agave has a completely different appearance from the large, traditional agaves people typically picture.

Its thin, narrow leaves form a rounded shape that looks beautiful in modern landscapes.

Why we love it:

  • Unique architectural appearance

  • Compact compared with many large agaves

  • Great contrast against flowering shrubs

  • Low water requirements once established

Our design tip: We like using Twin Flowered Agave in decorative rock beds alongside softer plants. Good drainage is essential, and its leaf edges should still be considered when placing it near high traffic areas.

7. Natal Plum

Best for: Dense evergreen foliage and clean planting beds

Natal Plum is a great choice when you want rich green foliage and a more polished landscape appearance.

Its glossy leaves, white flowers, and naturally dense growth make it useful around patios, raised planters, and landscape borders.

Why we love it:

  • Deep green evergreen foliage

  • Attractive white flowers

  • Works well as a low growing shrub

  • Complements modern landscape designs

Our design tip: Choose the right variety for the space. Some Natal Plum varieties have sharp thorns, so we avoid placing them where children or pets regularly play. They also appreciate protection during hard freezes.

8. Hercules Aloe

Best for: Statement plants and modern landscape design

Hercules Aloe is a plant we love using when a landscape needs a strong focal point.

Its blue green foliage and sculptural appearance can create a dramatic look, especially when paired with decorative rock and landscape lighting.

Why we love it:

  • Bold architectural appearance

  • Interesting foliage color

  • Low water requirements once established

  • Excellent focal point for larger planting areas

Our design tip: Hercules Aloe can eventually become a substantial tree like succulent. We plan for its mature size rather than treating it like a small accent plant.

9. Blue Flame Agave

Best for: Modern landscapes and soft architectural texture

Blue Flame Agave is another favorite for contemporary Las Vegas yards.

Its gracefully curved blue green leaves create movement while maintaining the structure that makes agaves so attractive.

Why we love it:

  • Beautiful blue green foliage

  • Sculptural shape

  • Pairs well with decorative rock

  • Low water requirements once established

Our design tip: Blue Flame Agave looks especially good in groups or as an accent beside pavers. We recommend careful placement away from narrow walkways and play areas.

10. Star Jasmine

Best for: Trellises, privacy screens, and fragrant flowers

Not every low maintenance Las Vegas landscape needs to look like a traditional desert landscape.

Star Jasmine is a great example. Its glossy evergreen foliage and fragrant white flowers can create a lush atmosphere around patios and outdoor living areas.

Why we love it:

  • Fragrant white flowers

  • Evergreen foliage

  • Climbs trellises and supports

  • Adds greenery to vertical spaces

Our design tip: Star Jasmine needs more protection than many desert plants. We prefer locations with morning sun and afternoon shade, along with consistent irrigation. It is a good option for the right microclimate, but not for every exposed west facing wall.

11. Red Bird of Paradise

Best for: Vibrant summer flowers and tropical desert color

Red Bird of Paradise is perfect for homeowners who want bold color without installing a traditional flower garden.

Its bright orange and red flowers create a tropical appearance while fitting into a water conscious landscape.

Why we love it:

  • Vibrant summer flowers

  • Thrives in full sun

  • Handles desert heat

  • Creates a colorful, natural appearance

Our design tip: Red Bird of Paradise can grow wide and may die back during winter. We give it room to spread and plan for seasonal pruning.

12. Lady Slipper

Best for: Modern desert landscaping, accent planting, and low maintenance backyards.

Lady Slipper is one of our favorite plants for adding a unique look to Las Vegas landscaping. Its slender green stems and small red flowers bring color and texture without making a yard feel overcrowded.

This plant thrives in full sun, handles the Las Vegas heat, and requires very little water once established. Its upright growth makes it a great addition to modern landscapes with decorative rock, pavers, and other desert plants.

Why we love it: Lady Slipper adds a clean, architectural look with seasonal color. We especially like using it in groups or as an accent alongside agaves and other drought tolerant plants.

Maintenance: Low. Requires well draining soil, occasional cleanup, and minimal pruning. Its milky sap can irritate skin, so handle with gloves and consider placement around children and pets.

How to Make a Las Vegas Landscape Look Green Without High Maintenance

One of the biggest mistakes we see is choosing plants individually without thinking about how they work together.

A beautiful landscape needs a combination of color, texture, height, and spacing.

For example, we might combine Bay Laurel for evergreen greenery, Regal Mist for softness, Yellow Bells for flowers, and Blue Flame Agave for structure.

The result is a yard that feels full and thoughtfully designed without needing traditional grass or excessive watering.

We also consider the property's sun exposure, soil drainage, irrigation system, and how large each plant will become over the next five years.

Low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance. Even drought tolerant plants need proper watering while becoming established, occasional pruning, and seasonal irrigation adjustments.

What Are the Best Low Maintenance Plants for Full Sun in Las Vegas?

For sunny locations, some of our favorite options include Texas Sage, Yellow Bells, Red Bird of Paradise, and appropriately placed agaves and yuccas.

For areas with afternoon shade or additional protection, Star Jasmine, Bay Laurel, and Natal Plum can help create a greener appearance.

The right plant depends on the exact location. A plant that performs beautifully in one Las Vegas backyard may struggle in another if the sun exposure, drainage, or watering is different.
