How We Built a Family Sports Backyard in Las Vegas
See how we transformed a Las Vegas backyard into a family sports space with artificial turf, a basketball pad, pitching area, playset, pool, and improved irrigation.
A great backyard should be designed around how the family will actually use it.
For this Las Vegas landscape project, the homeowners wanted more than a good looking yard. They wanted a space where their family could swim, play basketball, practice baseball, use the playset, and spend time outside together.
The property already had a pool, mature palm trees, an outdoor living area, and a large wooden playset. However, the existing grass, riverbed, trees, boulders, and uneven landscape divided the yard into separate areas and limited the amount of usable space.
Our goal was to connect everything into one functional family backyard.
Starting With How the Family Uses the Yard
Before choosing materials, we looked at how each part of the backyard needed to function.
The family needed open turf for everyday play, a concrete area for basketball, a place to practice pitching, safe access around the pool, and enough space for the existing playset.
Planning these areas together helped us create a yard that feels open while still giving every activity its own space.
The result was a design built around five main zones:
A large artificial turf play area
A concrete basketball pad
A 45 foot pitching area
The existing playset
The pool and outdoor living space
Major Removal and Grading Came First
Creating more usable space required a significant amount of preparation.
Our team removed existing grass, trees, five stumps, bamboo, boulders, flagstone, decorative rock, and sections of the old retaining wall. An unused riverbed was filled and graded so the new turf and concrete could be installed on a smooth and stable foundation.
This work is not always the most exciting part of a landscape transformation, but it is one of the most important. Proper removal and grading help prevent uneven turf, poor drainage, sinking areas, and other problems after installation.
We also had to carefully move the large wooden playset during construction. Once the turf was completed, the playset was positioned back within the new layout.
Creating a Large Artificial Turf Play Area
We installed 1,500 square feet of Viridian Green artificial turf throughout the backyard.
The turf connects the pool, playset, patio, basketball area, and pitching space. Instead of several disconnected landscape sections, the family now has one continuous surface for playing and moving throughout the yard.
Artificial turf works especially well for this type of backyard because it provides a clean and consistent surface without mowing or traditional grass irrigation. It also holds up better under frequent use than many natural lawns in the Las Vegas climate.
The existing trees and palms were incorporated into the turf layout so the yard could keep its established shade and character.
Adding a Basketball Practice Area
A new 25 by 27 foot concrete pad was installed to create a dedicated basketball area.
The pad was poured four inches thick using 3,500 PSI concrete and finished with a broom texture. A dedicated concrete footing was also installed for the future basketball hoop.
The location keeps the basketball area close to the main turf while creating a separate hard surface for shooting, dribbling, and practice. The plain concrete also gives the homeowners flexibility to add their preferred hoop and court markings later.
Protecting the Existing Palm Trees
Changing a landscape from natural grass to artificial turf also requires irrigation planning.
The existing irrigation system was adjusted to work with the new layout. Unused lines were capped, the manifold was restored, and new hard pipe was installed beneath the turf.
Netafim drip irrigation was added around the existing palm trees so they could continue receiving water without relying on grass sprinklers. A new hose bib was also installed to provide convenient water access in the backyard.
One Backyard With More Ways to Enjoy It
The finished backyard brings every part of the property together.
The family can move easily between the pool, playset, basketball pad, pitching area, patio, and open turf. There is room for sports and activity without losing the comfortable feeling of a backyard retreat.
This project shows that artificial turf can do more than replace natural grass. When it is included in a complete landscape plan, it can connect different outdoor spaces and make the entire yard more useful.
