For example, a simple ten light system may be very different from a larger property requiring multiple lighting zones, specialty fixtures, or more difficult cable routing.

What Types of Landscape Lights Should You Use?

A good lighting design is not about putting the same fixture every ten feet.

Different lights have different jobs.

We typically combine several fixture types to create layers of light throughout the landscape.

Spotlights

Spotlights are used to highlight the features you actually want people to notice.

They work especially well on:

A properly positioned spotlight can turn a tree that almost disappears at night into one of the biggest features in the yard.

These lights are installed flush or nearly flush with the ground and typically project light upward.

Because the fixture stays low and hidden, well lights can create a very clean look around trees, walls, columns, and other architectural features.

Ledge and Step Lights

Ledge lights are built into steps, walls, and other hardscape features.

They provide a much more integrated look because the fixture becomes part of the structure instead of sitting beside it.

They are especially useful around steps because they combine design with functional illumination.

This is also one of the reasons we recommend thinking about lighting before a landscape project is completed.

It is much easier to plan wiring and fixture locations before the hardscape is finished.

Should Landscape Lighting Be Installed Before Turf and Pavers?

Whenever possible, yes.

This is something homeowners often do not think about until the landscape is already finished.

A professional low voltage lighting system requires cable to be routed throughout the property.

If we know where the fixtures are going during the landscape installation, we can plan those routes before turf, pavers, rock, and other finishes are installed.

That makes it easier to conceal everything properly.

Lighting can absolutely be added to an existing landscape, but if you are already building a new yard, there is little reason to make it an afterthought.

Plan it before the turf, pavers, and finishes go in.

Professional Landscape Lighting vs. Solar Lights

There is nothing wrong with a solar light for a quick, inexpensive application.

But it is not the same thing as a professionally installed low voltage landscape lighting system.

Individual solar lights can vary in brightness and performance depending on their exposure and quality. They can also create a scattered look when they are added without an overall lighting plan.

A professional system allows us to think about the entire property as one design.

We can control where the light goes, what gets highlighted, how fixtures relate to each other, and how the yard looks from different viewing angles.

The goal is not simply to make the yard brighter.
