Winter may feel quiet in the yard, but proper watering during the colder months is one of the most important steps in protecting your landscape long term. In Las Vegas, winter watering looks very different than the rest of the year, and small adjustments now can prevent stress, root issues, and wasted water.

SNWA Winter Watering Schedule

According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, winter watering restrictions are in effect from November 1 through February 28.

During this period:
• Landscapes are limited to one assigned watering day per week
Sprinkler watering is not allowed on Sundays
• Drip and sprinkler systems both follow the same weekly limit

Your assigned watering day depends on your SNWA watering group, which can be found through SNWA resources or on your water bill.

Why Winter Watering Matters

Overwatering is one of the most common winter landscape issues in Southern Nevada. Plants use far less water in cooler temperatures, and excess moisture can lead to root stress, fungal issues, and poor plant health heading into spring.

Proper winter watering helps:
• Protect dormant and semi dormant plants
• Prevent soggy soil and root problems
• Improve overall plant health for spring growth

Winter Watering Best Practices

To keep your landscape healthy during winter months, SNWA recommends:
• Reducing run times significantly
• Watering in the mid morning hours to avoid freezing
• Watching for pooling or consistently wet areas
• Skipping watering after rain or during colder stretches

A quick visual check of your system can go a long way this time of year.

Looking Ahead to Spring

As temperatures begin to warm in late February and March, watering schedules will gradually increase. Making the right adjustments now helps ensure a smoother transition when spring arrives.

We recommend keeping an eye out for future reminders as seasonal schedules change so your landscape stays on track year round.

Winter may be a slower season for landscapes, but it is one of the most important times to water correctly. Thoughtful adjustments now help protect your investment and set your yard up for success as the growing season returns.
